Solar Energy
Rm 17 did an experiment with coffee and water to see which liquid would heat up the fastest using Solar energy.
Some of the predictions were that the coffee would heat up the fastest, because coffee is a dark shade/colour and the sun is attracted to dark shades/colours. Some people predicted that the water would heat up the fastest because water is thinner and less dense.
The teacher poured the water and coffee into plastic cups. After that had finished pouring all of our cups with coffee and water he told us to come down to the mat.The teacher gave each group a thermometer and told the class to put their cups of coffee and water outside in the sun.The coffee and water stayed out in the sun for 30 minutes. For 2 minutes the thermometer was in each liquid.
After that amount of time each group pulled out the thermometer and measured the temperature. Some groups found out the the water heated up the fastest and some found that the coffee heated up the fastest.Unfortunately the weather forecast was not sunny so the experiment was not possibly a true experiment.
Also the measurements weren’t filled accurately , so this might have interfered with the experiment. Some of the water that was poured into cups filled a ¼ of the cup and some of the coffee that was poured into cups filled ½ of the cups.Because of this the water could have heated up the fastest or the coffee could have depending on the measurements.
